February 15th, 2018

Present: Lori Anthony, Eric Camp, Casey Colvin, James Fesalbon, Josie Gardner, Angie Haggard, Maleah Huggins, Tamara Leonard, Maggie Luning, Hedwige Meyer, Beth Ramage, and Natassia Stelmaszek

  1. Meeting called to order at 3:03 pm.
  2. January 18th meeting minutes were approved.
  3. February 14th U-Wide meeting minutes were reported by Beth Ramage:
    1. Leslie Anderson was elected U-Wide Chair. Liz Kindred was elected Co-Chair. U-Wide meeting times were confirmed.
    2. Group reports were given. Most groups’ January meetings consisted of welcoming new members, electing office positions, reviewing OARS reports, and establishing committee charters.
    3. Facilities addressed the increase of low speed vehicles and golf carts on campus. New policies will be available by first quarter of 2018.
    4. Beth reported Group 6’s January minutes at the February U-Wide meeting, and highlighted our OARS report concerning the cyclist who was hit at 15th & Pacific, which sparked a lot of discussion. Transportation representation was not present at U-Wide to contribute to this concern. UWPD addressed the difficulty in pulling over vehicles at that intersection, or making it an “all way stop”. Some recommendations included audible wait/walk signals, or delaying car and/or foot traffic when signals change. EH&S reported that UWPD is working with SDOT on the issue.
    5. Our discussion about the New Learning Space Hours Policy and trespassing was reported at U-Wide. There was no reported input from other groups on this topic.
    6. UWPD gave an update on the College Republican/Patriot Prayer event that took place on February 10th. They reported an improved performance with UWEM and Student Life at communicating with the community on campus during the event. UWPD, Student Life and UWEM have begun holding regular meetings together to debrief on campus events.
    7. Special Olympics update was given. It will take place June 28th – July 7th.
    8. All other agenda items were tabled for the next U-Wide meeting on March 14th.
  4. Review of January 2018 OARS Reports:

  1. New Business:
    1. We discussed the College Republicans/Patriot Prayer event that took place on February 10th. All other events on campus were forced to be canceled. Several members reported large amounts of money and opportunity lost because of this, without any recognition from the University. EH&S has recommended we forward this information about department funds lost to the UWPD/SL/UWEM Debrief group and meeting.
    2. The inaccessibility to paper towels in the Denny Hall bathrooms and concerns about flu season was discussed. There are only air dryers inside the bathrooms. This has been an issue in the past, and funding for paper towels has been rejected in order to keep the facilities eco-friendly.
    3. UWPD now has a Community Engagement Unit offering various safety trainings. They have also updated their trespassing policy to arresting individuals with more than three trespassing warnings campus-wide.
    4. On January 24th Meany Center computer monitors were stolen. UWPD was called in. Reports of theft (brass hose valve covers) also reported from Denny Hall.
  2. Next meeting is Thursday, March 15th, 2018.
  3. This meeting was adjourned at 4:06 PM.
