This is applicable for all teaching, research, and artist faculty ranks.
The College maintains a clear distinction between promotion and reappointment in faculty personnel processes.
Promotion is defined as the formal recognition of a faculty member’s qualifications, performance, and contributions to the College through advancement in title. Consideration for promotion is based solely on an evaluation of the faculty member’s record of achievement and does not, in itself, confer a new contractual term.
Reappointment is defined as the renewal of a faculty member’s contractual appointment following an assessment of institutional/instructional need and performance during the period of service. Reappointment determinations establish the duration of the subsequent appointment term in accordance with College standards and title‑specific guidelines.
Promotion does not initiate a new contract cycle. Instead, when a faculty member is promoted during an existing term appointment, the remainder of the current contract term will be applied to the new title. For example, if an Associate Teaching Professor has been appointed to a five‑year term and is promoted during the first year of that term, the initial appointment as Teaching Professor will extend for the remaining four years of the term.
In circumstances where a promotion is granted concurrent with the conclusion of an appointment term, the College shall assign a new appointment term of the standard duration associated with the faculty member’s new title.
