I-9 Requirements
All employees must complete the Employment Eligibility Verification Form I-9 within three days of the their start date. This form needs to be completed in Workday as part of the onboarding process. This form is used to ensure that all employees are legally eligible to work in the U.S. Failure to comply could subject the University to heavy civil and criminal penalties.
Obtaining Visas for Foreign Nationals
When a non-U.S. citizen is offered a full-time, professorial rank position, the employing department should submit a ticket to the Administrative Support Team's visa experts in order to start the visa process. Immigration laws allow an alien to apply for an H-1B temporary visa and for permanent residence simultaneously. At the time of employment, the candidate must have either (1) an H-1B visa, obtained by the department through International Scholars Operations even though processing for permanent residence has started, or (2) approval of permanent residence status.
Important note: The permanent residence process must be initiated within 18 months of the initial offer, so reach out to the Administrative Support Team as soon as the offer is accepted.
