PLEASE REFER TO THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON CURRICULUM OFFICE FOR INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO APPLY FOR NEW COURSES, COURSE CHANGES, NEW PROGRAMS, AND PROGRAM CHANGES.

New Courses & Course Changes

Departments should maintain an ongoing review of their General Catalog course offerings.

Departments propose permanent course and program changes, additions, and deletions through the UW Curriculum Management system (UW CM).  These are submitted via UW CM to the College of Arts and Sciences Curriculum, Practices, and Standards Committee (College Curriculum Committee) through Kevin Mihata in the Dean’s Office.

The College Curriculum Committee reviews and makes recommendations on all departmental new courses and all substantive course change applications. It respects the responsibility of departments to shape their curricula, but it acts as required to assure conformity to College and University rules and to coordinate the varied elements in the College curriculum. The Committee may examine issues such as possible duplication of courses; differences among departments offering related courses; space, budget, and other implications of new or revised offerings; and appropriateness of the courses to the department, College, and University curriculum.

The College Curriculum Committee also reserves the right to review previously approved courses in light of changes in College or University policies and to rescind approval of courses that no longer meet such policies if appropriate changes are not instituted.

The course application and general education designation review processes have changed at the university-level based on recently approved Scholastic Regulations, which created the University Committee on Curriculum Administration (UCCA) and the University Committee on General Education (UCGE). Applications are now administratively reviewed and recorded on a rolling basis throughout the calendar year at the university-level, however, there are still College-level deadlines that need to be followed.

The approval workflow for applications will continue to include academic unit and college/school/campus-level review. After receiving college/school/campus-level approval, applications are then reviewed at the university-level by the UW Curriculum Office.

The majority of applications will be administratively recorded into the system after UW Curriculum Office review. Applications involving general education designation requests must also be reviewed and approved by the UCGE. Applications that present questions or issues that fall outside the scope of the UW Curriculum Office’s procedural review will be forwarded to the UCCA.

Undergraduate Program Proposals

The College of Arts and Sciences Curriculum, Practices, and Standards Committee carries out initial reviews on new undergraduate major, minor, and degree programs, as well as changes in undergraduate admission and program requirements. Undergraduate program proposals for new programs, program changes, new credentials, and credential changes are also submitted to the College Curriculum Committee through UW CM.

Changes cannot be implemented until they have been approved by the Divisional Dean; the College Curriculum Committee; the Faculty Council on Academic Standards; and the President.

Undergraduate Program Changes (majors, minors, admission requirements) are sent to the Faculty Council on Academic Standards for final review. More extensive additional reviews are required for new degree programs.
