Chair Responsibilities: Departmental Governance

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintain and update departmental policies and procedures as appropriate and in conformance with the Faculty Code and Executive Orders, including department hiring, retention, and merit policies and procedures.

  • Appoint both standing and ad hoc committees within the department, according to the unit’s governance policies and procedures

  • Call and preside over faculty meetings and ensure that departmental actions conform to university rules and regulations

  • Foster leadership experience and professional development opportunities for faculty

  • Oversee Academic Program Reviews: supervise the preparation of the self-study, ensure availability of data for the review, and represent the department to the assessment committees and Graduate School Council
