A&S Group 6 EH&S committee meeting

September 20, 2012, 3:00 pm

Present: Bob Blum, Michael Blalock, Beverly Wessel, Heidi Tilghman, John Martin

1. Meeting called to order by acting chair Blum at 3:15 pm.

1. Acting chair Blum announced his pending retirement.  Congratulations Robert!

1. Committee reviewed current incident reports:

2012-08-034 Slavic Languages—Complete, no further action required.

2012-08-037 Burke—Complete, no further action required.

2012-08-038 Burke—Complete, no further action required.

2012-08-039 Burke—Complete, no further action required.

2012-08-040 Burke—Complete, no further action required.

2012-08-041 Burke—Complete, no further action required.

2012-08-043 Burke—Incomplete, lacks corrective action target and completion dates.

2012-08-072 Art—Incomplete, lacks corrective action target and completion dates.

1. EH&S rep Blalock posed a question regarding safety committees ability to evaluate departmental safety plans for completeness and accuracy.  EH&S rep Blalock asserted that safety committees are well equipped to manage dept. safety plans using UW EH&S templates and guidance.  Committee members generally agreed while raising concerns about possible unfamiliarity with details of the building housing a program as well as potential safety issues unique to any given dept.  Additional ongoing concerns were raised in regard to committee’s authority to demand departmental compliance with safety plan requirements.   Discussion tabled until next meeting.
