Computer Security Tips

In today's ever connected world, everyone is a potential target to hackers and data thieves. Follow these tips to help keep your own personal data and University data safe.

  1. Keep software up-to-date:  installing updates for your operating system and other programs ensures you have the latest security patches.

    • Computers managed by CAS-IT have automatic updates turned on. On your personal device, we recommend you turn on automatic updates for your operating system.

    • Don't forget to update your web browsers, Google Chrome and Firefox will let you know when there is a security update.

  2. Practice secure password management: Choose unique passwords for every service and update them frequently.

    • We use too many services to remember unique passwords for every account. Using a password management tool will help you create strong and unique passwords, securely stores them, and can auto fill them for you on each website. CAS-IT offers LastPass Enterprise to Dean's Office employees, and the free version is available to all.

    • Turn on Two-Factor-Authentication (2FA) for services when available. 2FA uses what you know (passcode) and something that you have (phone app, email, phone number) to verify your identity. Turning on 2FA ensures that even if someone knows your login credentials they won't be able to sign into your account without the 2nd piece of identity verification.
  3. Avoid phishing scams: Phishing scams use social engineering to get you to give up your personal information, always play it safe, if something looks suspicious, it probably is.

    • Take the UW CISO's Office Online Phishing Training so you'll know what to look for.

  4. Do not leave unsecured devices unattended: Lock your screen or log out before you walk away.

    • You can use the keyboard shortcut Windows key + L on a PC

    • On a Mac, click the Apple Icon and select Lock Screen

  5. Install antivirus on your personal devices

    • The University of Washington offers Sophos Anti Virus to all Faculty, Staff and Students

    • Computers managed by CAS-IT will have Sophos installed already.
